A new political beginning<\/span><\/h3>\n

Alcide Berloffa, together with Silvius Magnago, is seen as one of the most important figures in the history of South Tyrolean autonomy. With his tact and ability to compromise, during his long life he was central to negotiations between Rome, Vienna and Bozen\/Bolzano. In 2001 he was awarded the Bishop Dr Joseph Gargitter Prize for his contribution to coexistence in South Tyrol. Childhood

Born in 1922, Berloffa was the eldest of five children in a family that moved from Trentino to Bolzano in 1928. His father worked on the construction of the electrical power plant in Cardano. Growing up in the Rencio district, he became familiar with German-speaking South Tyrol. <\/span><\/p>\n

The 1939, Hitler-Mussolini resettlement agreement, the \u201cOption\u201d, along with Italy’s entry into the war in 1940, ended Berloffa’s youth. Even before graduating from the school of geometry, he – like Magnago – was appointed to the commission that surveyed the property of emigrating South Tyroleans. Some friends joined the Wehrmacht, others the Italian army and Berloffa himself was also called up. After the German invasion in 1943 he went into hiding. <\/span><\/p>\n

Fine-tuning Autonomy <\/h2>\n

[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.8″ _module_preset=”default” text_line_height=”1.3em” header_3_font_size=”20px” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]Alcide Berloffa continued to play a central role in the implementation of autonomy. From 1972 to 1994, he was chairman of the Commission of Six and the Commission of Twelve. From 1977 to 1994 he was a member of the Council of State. He also contributed to the establishment of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, becoming its vice-president in 2002. Alcide Berloffa died on 25th February 2011.
